Twitter Buys Mobile Developer Whisper Systems
Rumors are circulating that Twitter may be boosting its mobile security options. It sure looks that way, considering that the social networking site just bought Whisper Systems, a security company that has sold products to Android phones in the past.
Twitter’s acquisition of Whisper Systems includes WhisperCore, a software that enables encryption and management tools for Android. The software is currently free to individuals and sold to enterprises. During the transition, WhisperCore will be available, but after the acquisition is complete, the product will be taken offline.
However, Whisper Systems released a software development kit earlier this year so that developers could build some of the security features into their own applications.
Twitter did not say what it plans to do with the new technology, but Whisper Systems said in a blog post that they’re “looking forward to bringing their technology and expertise into Twitter’s products and services.”
