If you received an Android or iOS device for Christmas this year, then you’re not alone. Analyst firm Flurry has released figures showing activations for these devices reached 17.4 million on Christmas day, a 332% increase over the December daily average of 4 million. That number sets a new record for activations in a single day and is more than twice the previous record of 6.8 million which was recorded on Christmas 2011.
While tablets normally only account for a fifth of device activations compared to smartphones, on Christmas they soared to a slight majority. Flurry reports that the Apple iPad, the iPad mini, and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7’’ tablet were the big winners of the day. Amazon had an especially good day as it saw activations growing by several thousand percent over its baseline from earlier in the month.
After unwrapping all those new devices, users quickly jumped right to downloading apps. 328 million apps were downloaded on Christmas 2012, at a rate of 20 million per hour for most of the day. As with the number of devices sold, the number of apps downloaded also broke all previous records, with a 112% over the daily average. App downloads will remain high through New Year’s Day and Flurry expects them to surpass 1.5 billion and possibly pass the 2 billion mark for the first time ever.
