Skype has won a place in the public consciousness as the preeminent VoIP service and the latest news underscores just how popular it is. In a post on its blog, Skype announced that users spend a combined 2 billion minutes on the Microsoft-owned service every day. That’s an incredible figure and one that the company has achieved likely by virtue of expanding its services across a range of devices including PCs, smartphones, tablets, and televisions.
To celebrate the news, Skype published an infographic listing some equivalent activities that could be accomplished in 2 billion minutes. For instance, 2 billion minutes is enough time to travel to the moon and back over 225,000 times, run 6.6 million marathons, or watch more than 16 million movies. Skype also did the conversions to show that 2 billion minutes is roughly equivalent to 33 million hours, 1,388,000 days, or 3,805 years.
“Thank you for making Skype a part of your daily life. With numbers like these, it’s clear that Skype is for more than just for special occasions – it’s for being together with those who matter most – at work, at home and anywhere in between,” the company wrote in its blog post. “Whether making a voice or video call, sending an instant message, sharing a file or connecting with a group of friends, now more than ever before, Skype brings people together whenever they are apart.”
